![]() UNITED EAST: Obviously the major helped lead you to Morrisville but were there any other factors that helped you make that decision?ĬARA: Definitely not a lot of schools that I looked at had the ability to do both the Dairy and basketball. ![]() And then if I had no classes or homework left, I’d go to the dairy and spend time with my heifer. My coaches do a good job of scheduling practices after all of our classes and during the day when I don’t have class I try to get all of my homework done. UNITED EAST: So that brings me to the question, how are you able to balance your life at the stable with your basketball career and your academic schedule? It seems like neither suffer as you were named MVP of the Women’s Basketball Championship this season and also medaled in the Heifer Show.ĬARA: I have always been busy even through high school, it has just been my mentality. I worked with mine for that show everyday for about an hour. How long does it take you to get in good with a new cow?ĬARA: It takes about a month to really get in tune with your heifer. UNITED EAST: Okay, I think I can teach a dog to sit in like a day. Basically you choose a heifer from the school’s barn, train her to a lead, clip her to the specific style which includes leaving some belly hair to show some depth and show that you have control over it. The picture you saw was actually for a class that I take. It’s based on showmanship where they judge both you and the cow together. Now, the whole reason I found out about your life beyond basketball is because Coach Erin posted an Instagram about you winning Best Heifer? What does that even mean? How do you win those kind of competition?ĬARA: It’s actually very similar to a Dog Show if you have ever seen one of those. UNITED EAST: Incredible, that idiom has a whole new meaning for me now. When people say “raised in a barn”, that’s me. I have shown them at State and County Fairs basically since I could walk. ![]() UNITED EAST: How do you even get into something like that?ĬARA: My grandparents have a 40-cow tie stall where we have both Jersey and Holsteins (types of cows) and I actually own quite a bit of the herd of myself. It deals a lot with the proper diet for cows and how to take care of any sick cows as well as how much to milk them. What is this major that has you working with cows?ĬARA WALKER: My major is Dairy Science with Dairy Management and that basically means we learn how to care for and tend to cows. ![]() UNITED EAST: I guess let us start with the main question. We were able to catch up with the multi-award winner this summer and ask her how these two passions came to be and how she is able to excel both on the court and in the barn. What most people may not have known was that just a couple months later, that same player was hoisting a different type of trophy in the Morrisville stables: Master Showman and Best Fitted Animal. A critical piece of the Mustang women’s basketball team, Walker hoisted the Most Valuable Player Trophy as the team captured the 2021 United East Championship crown. There are a lot of famous pairings across the planet but SUNY Morrisville’s Cara Walker has created a pairing that I'd bet most would never stick in the same basket (pun intended).
